Manhattan Street Scene, 2008

I stumbled upon a photo challenge on the WordPress reader. It is Instant Inspiration (31)  from Marcus Puschmann’s impeccable photoblog Streets of Nuremberg

Since I am still archiving my older photos, I picked a shot from my trip to NYC in March of 2008. I converted the original color image to B&W and then augmented the contrast per the challenge.

Below are both versions of the photo. Which do you prefer?

  1. Thanks for your kind words about my blog, Michelle, so much appreciated! And thanks for meeting the challenge 🙂 ! I like the monochrome conversion much better. The eyes follow the lines of the crosswalk into the image, they don’t get lost in the clutter of the various colors, that don’t really add to the story of the photograph. But probably I’m biased, as I love b&w street photography!

    1. The B&W version does reveal more of the nuts&bolts of the image’s composition. I took the photo in “tourist mode” originally, and I hadn’t considered converting it to monochrome because I was dazzled with all the colorful advertising in NYC.
