Summer Photo Walk, July 27

Today’s photo walk occurred at McLean Teddy Bear Park, which is a short drive east of Lima and full of delightful flora. The forest looks a bit different this year because we’ve had so much rain. Usually there’s sporadic orange jewelweed along the short forest trail at the height of summer, but today I saw long puffs of that wildflower that rivaled a small hedge in stature:

I also spotted a few of a wildflower that I hadn’t seen before in the forest, and I’m not sure what it’s called:

There are many pawpaw trees throughout this park’s forested areas, and noticed that one of the trees I passed had fruit on it:

The prairie was also lush with yellow wildflowers like prairie dock and oxeye sunflowers. I’m pleased that I saw a few butterflies flitting about and was able to get a picture of one of the monarch butterflies.

Summer Photo Walk, September 3

This morning I returned to the Allen County Children’s Garden. The tall grass garden is raging to record growth; the mulch path that winds through it was almost completely obscured with overgrowth. There were so many bees buzzing through the garden that I didn’t want to risk getting stung walking through that labyrinth.

In addition to my usual shots of flora from this delightful public garden, I also offer some of the whimsical decorations on display here.

We have started the slow march toward fall. In the background of one of the decorations, there is bokeh of yellow tree leaves. We’ve had a deficit of rain this summer so some of the leaves that are already changing may be due to leaf drop, a strategy trees use to cope with drought.

Invader

I tried to return to the wetlands today, but a insect pollen party blocked my path. I didn’t want to invade their gathering any further, so I lingered on the scene for a few moments and went back home.
